Understanding battery labelling requirements

SAA has released a series of new resources and training to support compliant labelling of battery installations, as the CER introduces new labelling photo requirements and ramps up its inspections program.

Incorrect labelling is among the most common non-compliances observed through the inspections program for the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).

Compliant labelling is essential to support the safety of installers, emergency responders and future trades working on systems with batteries.

New battery labelling course

The new free training course, COM004: Solar Battery Labelling, addresses:

  • Key battery labelling requirements and how they apply to real installations
  • Compliant and non-compliant battery labelling
  • Best-practice labelling to meet all relevant standards and avoid common non-compliances.

Completing the course and related assessment earns 20 continuing professional development (CPD) points.

Online resources available

A number of resources have been developed to support installers with compliant labelling.

They include a new Labelling Support document and Checklist, as well as information sheets on the each of 10 most common battery labelling non-compliances observed under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).

A solar PV labelling course and related information sheets on common PV labelling non-compliances will also be released in early April.

CER inspection results

With nearly 250,000 solar batteries installed across Australia, the CER is ramping up inspections of solar battery installations under the SRES.

The CER randomly selects installations for inspection and regularly publishes inspection results.

Additional CER photo requirements now in effect

In response to early inspection results, additional requirements have now been introduced for solar battery installations.

All accredited battery installers are now required to provide photo evidence of compliant labelling for every solar battery installed from 1 March 2026.

The CER has published a guide outlining the new photo requirements.
